CHARLOTTE SILVER

Matthew Isakowitz Fellow, Class of 2023

Duke University, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Minor in Computer Science

Host Company: Astranis

Charlotte Silver is a Junior at Duke University studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. Ever since high school she has been fascinated by space exploration and the proposition of commercial travel to distant planets. In order to explore this passion of hers, she collaborates with like-minded students in the Duke AERO Society by building the recovery system of a rocket to be launched in a 2023 national competition. This past summer she also worked as an R&D intern in Israel for Space Pharma, a space medicine company that sends biological experiments to space to discern microgravity’s effects on specific specimens. Her role was to design a payload and its internal components to be launched to the Moon in 2024 with the company SpaceIL on the Beresheet2 rocket. Inside of the payload will be a biological experiment containing antibacterial drugs with the aim of observing how radiation in deep space affects the chemical composition of the drugs. Eager to further explore the potential of space to improve daily life on Earth through space vehicle innovation, she is ecstatic to be granted with the opportunity to work with Astranis this summer and help connect people all over the world through internet connection with satellites. Aside from her fascination with space, Charlotte is also the CEO of Embrace Bags, a company which provides struggling scoliosis patients with a solution to conceal their bulky back braces from others. In her free time, she loves to cook with friends and family, go to the beach and travel to new places.
